Debate over night flights at BER
24. März 2025

Berlin’s mayor, Kai Wegner from the CDU, has sparked debate by proposing a relaxation of Berlin Brandenburg Airport’s BER night flight ban, which currently prohibits departures and arrivals between midnight and 5:30 AM. Wegner argues that the current policy is inefficient, especially when minor delays force flights to divert to other airports. His comments come after two Ryanair flights were recently rerouted to Hanover due to arriving just minutes after the cutoff time. Wegner’s proposal has met strong opposition. Berlin’s Economic Senator Franziska Giffey SPP has pushed back, stating that residents have a right to undisturbed sleep and that maintaining strict noise restrictions is essential for the well-being of people living near the airport. The issue is particularly contentious for Brandenburg residents, some of whom want the night flight ban extended to 10 PM to further reduce aircraft noise in surrounding areas.
