Berlin launches official bid to host 2036 Summer Olympic Games
30. Mai 2025

Berlin has officially entered the race to host the 2036 Summer Olympic Games, unveiling an ambitious plan dubbed “Berlin+” that aims to bring the world’s biggest sporting event back to Germany’s capital for the first time since 1936.

Olympiastadion to Host Key Events, Including Skateboarding and Beach Volleyball in Iconic Locations

Central to the bid is the use of Berlin’s Olympiastadion — the site of the infamous 1936 Olympics held during Nazi rule — as the main stadium for athletics and ceremonies. Mayor Wegner emphasized that this upcoming Games would stand in stark contrast, celebrating peace, solidarity, and freedom. The proposal includes hosting skateboarding competitions at the famous Tempelhofer Feld, a former airport turned vast public park, and beach volleyball at the Brandenburg Gate, integrating the city’s landmarks into the Olympic experience.

Berlin’s Sports Senator Iris Spranger highlighted the city’s readiness to host the event, pointing out that over 90% of the required sports facilities are either already available or can be constructed temporarily. She also referenced Berlin’s successful hosting of the UEFA European Championship last summer, where security and logistics were rigorously tested with large-scale crisis simulations.

A Regional Collaboration Across Five German States

The “Berlin+” concept extends beyond the city’s borders, proposing to involve four neighboring states: Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony, and Schleswig-Holstein. This collaborative approach aims to spread the economic and infrastructural benefits of the Olympics throughout the region, showcasing a united effort to host a sustainable and inclusive event.

Currently still in the concept phase, Berlin’s bid is set to be formally submitted by autumn 2026, following further consultations with the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The Summer and Winter Olympics are already booked through 2034, so hosting could take place in 2036, 2040, or 2044.
