Government defends talks with Taliban on deportations to Afghanistan: The contacts are of a technical nature and do not constitute recognition of the regime in Kabul, the Interior Ministry said. German in Europe: Migration strengthens the language. The German language remains vibrant despite challenges – supported in part by immigration. According to the new book German in Europe, written by 22 researchers, migration does not threaten the language but can stabilize it by bringing in new speakers. Linguist Ludwig M. Eichinger emphasized that German remains the predominant language spoken in everyday life across Germany. Overall, about 95 million people speak German as their first language and 30 million as a second, making it the second most spoken language in Europe after Russian. In Eastern Europe, however, German is declining in places such as Poland, the Czech Republic, and Russia. Romania stands out positively, with schools opening German-language programs to non-native speakers. Researchers also highlighted the role of institutions like the Goethe-Institut and DAAD in promoting the language. The book, published by the German Academy for Language and Literature, is available for free online.
