High Dissatisfaction Rates Among German Teenagers
8. Oktober 2024

The Good Childhood Report 2024 has revealed that 21.6 percent of 15-year-olds in Germany are dissatisfied with life. Among European teenagers, only those in Poland, Malta, and the UK are less happy. In contrast, the Netherlands, Finland, and Denmark boast the lowest dissatisfaction rates at 6.7 percent, 10.8 percent, and 11.3 percent, respectively. The report draws on data from various surveys, including the UK Longitudinal Household Survey and the OECD’s PISA results, to provide a comprehensive overview of teenage life across Europe. Therefor it also highlights how socioeconomic inequality affects life satisfaction among adolescents. In Germany, there is a notable 7.5 percentage point gap in life satisfaction between the most advantaged and the most disadvantaged 15-year-olds. Additionally, the study „Wie ticken Jugendliche?“ from 2023 indicates that key concerns for 14 to 17-year-olds in Germany include the transition into work, the climate crisis, and immigration issues.
