As part of the new „Wachstumsinitiative“ (growth initiative), the German government has announced a new law that will make job center visits a monthly requirement for people receiving the long-term unemployment benefit known as Bürgergeld. Under this new regulation, having phone or email contact with Jobcenter staff will no longer be sufficient. According to the coalition, these in-person meetings aim to “increase contact density” and ensure that “existing integration opportunities are better utilized.” The government believes that regular face-to-face interactions will enhance support for job seekers and improve their chances of finding employment. Currently, it remains unclear when the new rules will be implemented and who exactly will be affected. In addition to the job center meeting requirement for recipients, the Wachstumsinitiative will impose harsher penalties on cash-in-hand work by Bürgergeld recipients. Furthermore, individuals receiving Bürgergeld will be required to utilize any “substantial assets” after six months of claiming benefits instead of the previous 12 months.
