When moving to Berlin, Newcomers obliged to register their new address within 14 days of arrival. This registration, known as Anmeldung, is crucial for various administrative tasks, including applying for a residence permit, opening a bank account, or seeking employment. However, many newcomers face significant bureaucratic hurdles, often struggling to secure an appointment within that two-week timeframe. To address this issue, the Bürgeramt has implemented a new online registration system starting mid-October. Newcomers can now register their addresses online and receive their documents by post. According to the Berlin Senate, this initiative will free up approximately 50,000 appointment slots at the city’s Bürgerämter. This move is part of a broader effort to digitize bureaucratic services; in November 2023, the city also introduced the option to obtain a Meldenbescheinigung or registration certificate online for those moving within Berlin.
