WahlheYmat Talks with Paul Spies
24. April 2025

At last night’s WahlheYmat Talks in the PopUp Saal of the Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek, former Stadtmuseum Berlin director Paul Spies offered a personal and powerful reflection on what it means to belong in Berlin. Speaking from his experience as a Dutch expert invited to lead a major institution in Germany, Spies tackled the complex topic of inclusion—highlighting how foreign perspectives can shape and enrich the city.

The conversation explored why forming friendships in Berlin can feel difficult, especially for newcomers. Spies touched on the idea of “German Angst”—a cultural hesitation that often prevents deeper social connections and openness to new voices in leadership. He challenged Berlin to become more welcoming and courageous, especially in embracing foreigners not only as residents, but as leaders.

Audience members shared their own stories of struggling to make meaningful connections, emphasizing how language barriers and cultural norms continue to hinder integration. Still, the energy in the room was hopeful. Spies also reminded the audience of Berlin’s history as a creative refuge, recalling the city’s 1970s vision of attracting artists and free thinkers. His message was clear: Berlin’s strength lies in its diversity—and it’s time to fully embrace it.
